SOME one has rightly commented that under Daesh (the so-called Islamic State) history is now becoming history. Is the world community so helpless that it cannot prevent a mad crowd from looting, ransacking and destroying our shared heritage? This February, they destroyed ancient artefacts at the central museum in Mosul; in March they used explosives and bulldozers to ransack the centuries-old ruins of Nimrud, one of Iraq` greatest archaeological treasures. Then this rabid group moved towards the ruins of Hatra.
Now it`s Palmyra nicknamed Pearl of the Desert. it`s being destroyed bit by bit. It`s 2000-yearold Baalshamin temple that has also been destroyed .
Earlier 80-year-old Syrian archaeologist Khaled Al-Asaad, who spent his entire life in preserving these gems of the ancient world in Palmyra was beheaded, onlybecause he refused to reveal the location of artefacts which have been moved for safe keeping.
It`s obvious the IS was looking for these treasures to make some quick bucks in the black market. Daesh is not alone in this madness their brethren in Mali and Afghanistan did the same by destroying the relics of Timbuktu and Buddha statues.
I just wonder why the world is unable to bring this insanity to an end. It is a mental disease spreadingin country after country no one knows which is the next.
