UAF achieves milestone with 40 new crop varieties

TOBA TEK SINGH: The University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) has developed 40 varieties of crops, vegetables, and fruits in 2023, promising significant advancements in agricultural productivity.

UAF Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan informed the faculty that various strains of wheat, soybean, sugarcane, okra, chickpea, mangoes, chia, and more have been created by UAF scientists.

About agricultural sector challenges, Prof Dr Khan saidtheUAFhadbeendesignated asthe AgriTechnology Park and is formulating the 2023-2033 agriculture policy. The UAF admitted 8,000 graduates, reflecting a considerable increase in program participation.

Prof Dr Khan said the university organised 609 events for outreach enhancement, tripling last year`s figures. The approval of a students` council by statutory bodies aims to boost student involvement, propelling the university forward. He said the UAF is the sole institution in the country within the top 100 universities worldwide in its subject category.

Collaborating with international partners, the university runs the Pak-Korean Nutrition Centre, Seed Centre, Center for Advanced Studies, and more.

The funding for PKNC has reached Rs4.5 billion, offering a robust solution to malnutrition. The total planning and development portfolio has surpassed Rs29 billion, demonstrating UAF`s dedication to addressing the needs of the teaching community and students.

Prof Dr Khan commended the faculty`s dedication and their role in paving the way for new avenues of development.

MURDERED: Two brothers were murdered, and a woman was injured in a crossfire between two neighbours in the Christian village of Chak 51-GB in Samundri tehsil of Faisalabad on Wednesday.

According to police officials, a dispute arose between Ameen Masih Gill and Shavaiz Masih, leading to indiscriminate firing. As a result, Ameen and his brother Nadeem Masih, along with Shavaiz`s niece Shaina Masih were injured. They were shifted to the Allied Hospital, where both brothers succumbed to their injuries.
