KARACHI: Thinking in the top echelons of the economic planners appears to have taken a distinct turn in favour of giving the country’s development a strong heavy-industry bias.
A clear indication of this new line of thinking was given by no less a person than the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Mr Said Hassan, yesterday, when he said: ‘Time has now come when we should enter the field of heavy industryJanuary 30, 1962 which is essential to maintain the country’s economic viability.
His forthright and strong support for heavy industry, which did not figure prominently in the first two FiveYear Plans, suggest that when the question comes up before a high-level conference, which is scheduled to meet shortly in Karachi, a favourable decision may be taken.
