CPEC & Kashmir

THIS refers to the article ‘Literature in times of terror’ (March 2) by L A. Rahman.

We must be grateful to the writer for sharing the comments of two Chinese scholars at a Punjab University seminar.

The first is that China’s policies should be understood in terms of its own leader’s observations and not through their Pakistani translators.

This is most timely as the same issue of Dawn reports a Peshawar University Chinese Studies Cell seminar in which the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was discussed without any Chinese citizen participating.

The Chinese said that the benefits of the CPEC should be available to India too and the states of the region should strengthen economic co-operation after putting their disputes on the backburner.

What does this mean in practical terms? Should we be struggling for human rights in Pakistan and cheering human rights violations in Kashmir? Perhaps our own mandarins can enlighten us.
