By Our Correspondent 2017-05-12
KHAR: The Centre for Disabled Persons Bajaur on Thursday began manufacturing artificial limbs for the people with disabilities here.

The development comes after the installation of modern machinery with the financial assistance of a nongovernmental organisation.

A ceremony in this respect was held at the Agency Headquarters Hospital, where agency surgeon Dr Abdul Haq, Physical Rehabilitation Programme Fata focal person Dr Hayat Khan, coordinator for the centre Dr Imtiaz Ali Shah and representatives of the Fata health services directorate and All Bajaur Disabled Persons Association were in attendance.

Dr Hayat informed participants about the Physical Rehabilitation Programme and said manufacturing of artificial limbs at the centre was made possible after the installation of modern machinery and provision of imported equipment by the Fata health services directorate with the financial support of an international organisation.

He said the centre would offer artificial limbs to the people with disabilities freeof charge on their doorstep.

The programme`s focal person said powerful generators had also been provided to the centre to ensure smooth electric supply.

He said Bajaur was Fata`s only region to have the artificial limb manufacturing facility.

Dr Imtiaz Ali Shah, coordinator for the Centre for Disabled Persons in Bajaur, said the installation of modern machinery to the facility would not only help provide artificial limbs to the people with disabilities free of charge but also ensure quick supply of limbs.

He said the centre had registered over 2,000 physically-challenged people from across the agency.

Dr Imtiaz however said the number of the people with disabilities was alarmingly on the rise in the agency for different reasons.

Agency surgeon Dr Abdul Haq said the manufacturing of artificial limbs in Bajaur Agency would not only help the physically-challenged people but also benefit the residents of the adjoining Momand Agency and Lower and Upper Dir districts.

Representatives of the All Bajaur Disabled Persons Association thanked the Fata secretariat and international NGO for initiating the project.
