WE talk about women`s liberation, empowerment, equality, etc even though they are routinely deprived of life, liberty and property.
Islam gives women all these rights, but women lack protection due to the poor implementation of laws.
Women are often murdered for the sake of `honour` or to steal their inheritance, and even minors are forced into marriage.
Sexual and physical abusers get away with their crimes while their victims are blamed in turn.
The burden of upholding moral values is placed entirely on women while men are allowed to act on their whims and indulge in lip-service.
It is often said men and women are two wheels of the same vehicle; they should work together in harmony. But whether they want to access public spaces, or resources they are entitled to, or seek employment, they are forced to remain subservient to the dictates of theirrelations and the shackles of backwards customs.
How can we build a progressive society when we force women to believe that, no matter how educated or talented they are, their greatest aim in life should be marriage and staying at home to do domestic work when we don`t apply similar pressures on men? The violation of women`s rights must be checked, and we must shun these regressive attitudes and double standards in our society.
