Govt criticised for its `failure` to control pandemic

Bureau Report 2020-05-18
PESHAWAR: The main opposition parties Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have described spread of Covid19 across the country as failure of government and asked for effective steps to overcome the pandemic and protect the people from starvation.

PPP provincial president Mohammad Humayun Khan and PML-N provincial secretary information Ikhtiar Wali Khan intheir separate statements here on Sunday said that government had enough time to protect the nation from coronavirus but it didnot take practicalsteps toisolate the infected people timely.

Mr Humayun said that opposition had always offered cooperation to government for solution to key national issues including controlling the pandemic but the rulers were not serious to resolve the problems.

He said that Prime Minister Imran Khan did not bother to brief the parliamentarians about the government`s initiatives for control of the pandemic.

The PPP leader said that prime minister was also holding portfolio of the health minister but he did not bother to attend the session of parliament at least to take the lawmakers into confidence for taking coordinated stepsagainst the pandemic.

He said that government also failed to resolve economic problems of the poor as most of the low income groups suffered financially due to the lockdown.

He said instead of taking practical steps for solution to the core issues, the government was creating differences among the provinces by targeting the opposition parties through National Accountability Bureau.

Mr Humayun alleged that federal government was creating problems for Sindh government but any irresponsible step by the rulers would harm the federation. He said that Imran Khan failed to deliver and made frequent U-turns.

Meanwhile, PPP women wing leader and former MPA Dr Faiza Rashid said that the Supreme Court`s notice to the federal gov-ernment and recent resignations of two senior doctors of Lady Ready Hospital Peshawar for lack of required facilities exposed the seriousness of both the federal and provincial governments to control coronavirus.

She said that the Supreme Court`s notice to the government was like a charge-sheet against the rulers. She said that government should create harmony and consensus among the provinces to pave way for solution to key national issues.

PML-N`s Ikhtiar Wali said that resignations of doctors proved that government was unable to resolve problems of the health professionals and was putting lives of the people at risk. He asked the government to address reservations of the healthcare providers and protect lives of people.
