GUJRAT: Local authorities will not be able to achieve the wheat procurement target in the Gujrat district due to the adverse effect of heavy rains of April as farmers have so far obtained only about 90,000 gunny bags against the official target of at least 280,000.

The district food controller said that so far only 44,332 wheat bags could be procured at five wheat procurement centres in Gujrat, Jalalpur Jattan, Mungowal, Lalamusa and Dinga.He said though the Gujrat district was never among the districts producing a bumper wheat crop, this season`s rains had badly hit the crop which caused an unprecedented reduction in the per acre yield.

However, he said all efforts were being made to meet the maximum target.

Meanwhile, an inspector of the district food department deputed at the Mungowal procurement centre was suspended from service for negligence in checking the moisture in wheat bags.

An inquiry has also been ordered against the said official.
