Punjab sports, youth festival 90 sports, cultural events in every tehsil

LAHORE, July 18: Up to 90 events will be held in every tehsil of Punjab under the Punjab Sports and Youth Festival, 2012, Punjab Sports Board Director General Usman Anwar said here on Wednesday.
Among the sports events, 18 are for the general public and 12 for secondary school students while the remaining events will be played under eight categories.
He said Rs1 million would be disbursed to the winners of competitions and sports contests in every tehsil, which would begin after the conclusion of events at neighbourhoods, villages and union councils.The festival will begin after Eidul Fitr which aims at providing healthy activities to the people of all walks of life.
At the tehsil level, Mr Anwar said, the competitions had been divided into two categories -general public and education. Family events are sub-divided into individuals, families and rural teams while the education sector has three sub-sectors elementary schools, secondary schools and sports for secondary schools.
He said that in general public sports competitions will be held in arm wrestling, athletics, badminton, basketball, billiard and snooker, chess, cricket (tape-ball), football, tug of war, volleyball, bodybuilding, hockey, weightlifting, cricket (hardball), kabaddi, mat wrestling, mud wrestling and table tennis.
Elaborating other sectors, Mr Anwar said that competitions like cooking, horticulture, mushaira (poetry recital), naatkhani, pets competitions, photography, songs, debates, dress designing and stitching, handicraft, painting, family dressing, kitchen gardening, healthy baby, drama and documentary, street art, street art and theatre would be held among the general public while bull race, dog race, tippling and pigeon flying, bull cart race, donkey cart race, horse race and agriculture and livestock produce are the events for rural sector.
Among the competitions for schools, elementary schools students will compete in debate, essay writing, songs, naatkhani, painting and Holy Quran recitation and the students of secondary school will contest in events like cooking, cultural models, debate, dress show, essay writing, handicraft, songs, painting, and science models.
Students will also take part in sports like arm wrestling, athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, cricket (both tape ball and hardball), football, hockey, table tennis, tug of war and volleyball.
The director general said that competitions in all these events will be held among sports and youth development councils of each union council.
Inter-union council matches and competitions will be held in each tehsil while the matches and competitions will also be held between the participating teams and individuals at the tehsil council level.-APP
