T HE National Saving Schemes of fering monthly profit on deposits deduct 10pc witholding tax from all tax filers. The WHT is deducted at source every month from their profit.

A very large percentage of depositors who opt for these NSS schemes are senior citizens who are dependent upon a secure income through the National Savings Centre. With the continuous fall in interest rates, it is becoming very difficult for senior citizens to meet their daily expenses and cope with ever-increasing inflation as well.

I therefore request the finance minister to exempt senior citizens above 60 years from the WHT in the forthcoming budget to provide them some relief.
