MUCH of the debate on Rangers` powers in Sindh has been about their jurisdiction and tenure. This has essentially not changed or evolved in decades. Perhaps the authorities should consider a permanent role for the Rangers by way of appointing them as an empowered oversight body to ensure the police are not engaged in any corruption, crime or abetting criminals.

This may just provide the police the impetus to improve their act and move on from being focused on VIP protection to resuming their core duties of crime prevention and crime fighting. Certainly, the police should not depend on the Rangers to continue doing this for them indefinitely.
