Plea bargain

2017-01-04
IT is extremely regrettable to say that neither the government itself nor the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) seems to be serious in effacing the menace of corruption from society.

NAB`s recent announcement about returning Rs2bn from Mushtaq Raisani on the basis of a plea-bargain agreement is totally against the will of the people.

When the former finance secretary of Balochistanhad been arrestedfor corruption, NAB had accused him of having accumulated Rs 40 billion illegally.

NAB has miserably failed to ensure accountability and transparency in thecountry. The Supreme Court had recently directed NAB not to use its powers of plea bargain. Yet the latter went on to challenge the former`s orders.

The government should immediately depoliticise all anti-corruption establishments so that they may potentially perform their duty without any interference.
