I AM a senior citizen who has been living in the same neighbourhood for about 36 years. For the past year and a half, our block has not received water from the Karachi Water and Sewage Board (KWSB).
Despite the fact that I pay my water billsregularly, I am forced to purchase water from expensive tankers so that I have running water. Being a retiree, I cannot afford tobearsuchexpenses.
Upon enquiry, residents of our block were told by KWSB that our connection to the water supply had been disconnected because approximately 50pc of residents hadnotpaid theirdues.
The board said that theyneed atleast 70pc of payments to reconnect the line. We then approached the non-paying residents, who said that once the line is reconnected they will pay the arrears.
KWSB has been very helpful, and we understand their predicament. However, there must be a way for them to supply water to those residents who pay their bills regularly so that we do not suffer.
Meanwhile, there should be a way to ensure that payments are collected from those who do not pay or that they are punished accordingly.
