Harassing tax filers

2014-12-06
I RE AD Asad Siddigi`s article `Travails of being a non-filer` ( Economic and Business Review, Nov 30) by, with much interest. My story is no different from the writer`s.

In spite of my meagre income, I have been filing my income tax returns duly for the last many years online through my consultant to comply with the government`s wishes to expand its taxpayers numbers.

However, my name was not included in taxpayers`directory2013,uploaded by the FBR on its website.

Subsequently, the National Savings Centre and my dealing banks started threatening me with imposition of additional five per cent withholding tax on profits.I, later on, tried to ring the FBR helpline which was never received. Ultimately, I sent an email dated to info@fbr.gov.pk on Sept 3 containing details of filing of income tax return for 2012-13. However, its reply too was never received.

After many weeks of sending my email, I again undertook the arduous task of downloading and searching my name in the taxpayers, which requires many hours because of slow speed of the Internet but I did not find my name in the list.

I wonder how the government can realise its dream of expanding its tax net unless it puts its own house in order! Iseem Mumtaz Lahore
