Workers` welfare

2016-08-17
THIS is apropos Parvez Rahim`s article `Workers` welfare` (Aug 3).

The launching of the Workers Welfare Fund (WWF) was a good scheme, which gave workers a sense of participation in companies` affairs and in their profits.

But one wonders where all the funds so accumulated are utilised, as the the workers remain in a miserable condition as ever.

The WWF has amassed huge funds which instead of being used for workers` welfare are parked in banks where handsome interest is earned.

Of what benefit are these funds if no proper health care is available to the worker and his family? With these funds, well-equipped basic health units could have been established at district headquarters.

Similarly, good educational institutions, along the lines of the existing private schools, could have been opened in major cities for workers` children.

Housing societies for workers could have also been initiated. One such scheme was planned at Japan Road in Islamabad about 20 years ago, but no news after that.
