Showcasing vanity

2014-11-07
THE prime ministers of Pakistan and India should take measures that allow both countries to live like two normal and decent neighbours.

Eachday asthenagsarelowered atthe Wagah border, Pakistani and Indian guards indulge in a display of aggression, anger and animosity. This has no resemblance to the dignified parade that is otherwise a part of their routine.

Why do the two neighbours need to enact mutual hatred as a symbol of their national pride? What is the need for this bellicosity? Why can they not lower their flags with peace and dignity? The highly choreographed drama of vanity and bravado adds little to our self-respect. Can we not do without it? Is it too much to ask the two prime ministers to come to an agreement that both sides would discontinue this display of belligerent posturing and perform the flaglowering ceremony in a friendly and respectful manner.
