THE retirement of a sports star at the peak of his career is understandable and somehow acceptable for he would like to call it quits when he is at his best.
But Gen Raheel Sharif`s retirement against strong popular will, that too in the thick of a bloody war against terrorism, is neither understandable nor acceptable.
A true test of Nawaz Sharif`s patriotism and commitment to the war against terrorism lies in convincing Gen Raheel to continue. Such an extension will be read differently from the one given by Asif Zardari to the then army chief as his decision was for personal reasons. Nawaz Sharif`s will be for the national cause.
