63 building owners told to adopt fire safety measures

GUJRAT: The district administration has issued notices to at least 63 major commercial buildings of the city for not employing fire safety measures.

The buildings were idendhed through a detailed survey conducted by a joint team of Rescue 1122 and civic agencies following the fire at Aleena Shopping Mall here in October.

District Emergency Officer Umar Akbar Ghumman told participants of the district disaster management committee that so far the survey of commercial buildingslocated along Court Road, Jail Road, Jalalpur Jattan Road and Bhimbher Road had been completed and the buildings with at least three storeys were selected to ascertain their safety measures.

He further said that at least 63 buildings were found lacking proper fire safety measures, posing a threat to the businesses as well as the lives of traders, workers and residents of these buildings.

The owners and managements of these buildings have been issued 30-day notices to install fire safety equipment or pay hefty fines as well as chances of their buildings being sealed.
